Willie Mays was but 17 years old and still in high school when he was signed by the Birmingham Black Barons in 1948. He would sharpen his fundamentals and mature quickly in the few years he spent in the Negro Leagues before joining Leo Durocher's New York Giants in 1951. The rest, as we know, is history.
