This intimate view of Jackie Robinson waiting on deck with bat held aloft, frame slightly skewed off level, drew me in for a variety of reasons. This could have been Robinson’s very first at-bat in Brooklyn, or his last. The hero in repose, contemplative versus combative, holding his weapon aloft; either weighing his future or assessing his past. I have described Robinson as saint-like in reference to my painting of him in The Trinity. I think the religious overtones are present here again: Robinson genuflecting at that great alter that was Ebbets Field.
